. To be a Brandon Maxwell woman is to be glamorous. The proof is in the devastatingly chic yellow shift that the wore on a recent royal outing, the structured white gown that chose for a much-photographed White House State Dinner, the groovy high-waist trousers and cropped sweater that selected for this year’s Met Gala.
Now, Maxwell is taking that glamour into the world of beauty with a five-piece collaboration with MAC. Launching September 8, the morning of Maxwell’s Spring 2019 show, the collection has a bronzed eye palette with hints of rose, two warm red lipsticks, and a pair of bubbly pink Lipglasses for those daring enough to rock some glitter.
“Beauty and cosmetics is something I’ve been thinking about as long as I was old enough to think!” Maxwell tells Vogue. “My biggest childhood activities were stealing all the quarters and dimes in my parents’s change drawer and going to the beauty supply store. I was grounded multiple times for glueing extensions in my friend’s virgin hair at age 10, using up full bottles of Aqua Net. It’s ingrained in me.” That full-blown obsession considered, it’s surprising that a MAC collaboration took so long. But Maxwell is not only a perfectionist (i.e., willing to wait for the right moment) but also a sentimentalist (i.e., wanting to find a moment with heart). His upcoming Spring 2019 collection provided the right opportunity. “This show is very personal to me, and you only do a personal show like this once in a lifetime,” he begins.
“Really shortly after, my whole team picked up and moved to Texas to make the next collection because I just really needed to have a break and work in a very quiet, clear environment.” They lived in the same house for a month, producing a lineup of pieces near and dear to the designer’s heart. Without divulging too much before the runway show, Maxwell hints that the collection will be unlike any before it, part evolution, part homage to the women that have shaped him into the creative he is today. “As we were coming back from Texas, I was thinking so much about what an incredible opportunity I’ve had, as a kid that was from the middle of nowhere really, to have the opportunities that I have now,” he says. And so he asked MAC if they could work together on a collaboration that took Maxwell’s signature glamour and added some soul.
Each shade is named after a woman in Maxwell’s life—see the Mawmaw rose eyeshadow—and the packaging draws from Maxwell’s own tattoo of Texas on his left wrist, with a little heart drawn over his hometown, Longview. There’s also an element of giving back because, as Maxwell says, “What’s the point if you’re doing this just for yourself?” With MAC, he launched the #MACItHappen campaign on Instagram, a contest with the grand prize of a trip to New York Fashion Week. Thousands applied, and two winners have been chosen, posting rapturous notes on Instagram about their dreams coming true. For those who didn’t win, Maxwell hopes the collaboration can still inspire a sense to follow their passions, no matter how impossible they might seem.
